James Montgomery

1771 - 1854

Poet. Born in Irvine (North Ayrshire), the son of a minister. He eventually settled into the occupation of a journalist and newspaper proprietor in Sheffield (England). He began as a radical, serving time in jail for publishing seditious material, but over time became rooted in a more conservative outlook. His poems have been described as 'bland and deeply religious'.
