Clergyman and church administrator. Most likely born in Westfield (near Elgin), Dunbar was the son of Sir Alexander Dunbar of Westfield, and grandson of James Dunbar, 4th Earl of Moray (d.1430). He was appointed Bishop of Aberdeen in 1519 and served until his death. He was an uncle of Gavin Dunbar (c.1495 - 1547) who was the Archbishop of Glasgow. One of the major protagonists behind the building of St. Machar's Cathedral (Aberdeen), continuing the work started by Bishop William Elphinstone (1431 - 1514), Dunbar provided the inspiration for its noteworthy painted ceiling (c. 1520). He died in St Andrews and is buried in the St. Machar's Cathedral.
