Gazetteer Sources

Entries in the Gazetteer for Scotland have been compiled using a range of primary and secondary sources collected by the editors. Great care has been taken not to infringe the copyright of others.

Sources include:

  • Local and Central Government publications
  • Tourist Authority publications
  • Leaflets, web sites or other literature relating to particular features or tourist attractions
  • Letters or telephone calls to specific organisations posing particular questions
  • A programme of field work and regular visits on the ground around Scotland
  • Original investigation of places through the use of historical documents
  • Thousands of original photographs taken for the project and (occasionally) collections of photographs made available to us
  • Out-of-copyright sources (effectively works published before 1920, or in the case of UK Crown Copyright, works published before 1965)
  • Information provided by Historic Scotland and The Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland
  • US National Imagery and Mapping Agency (NIMA) Geographic Names Database (GNDB)
  • Intelligence provided by OpenStreetMaps, Google StreetView and Microsoft Bing
  • Map pages make use of mapping layers provided by OpenStreetMaps, Ordnance Survey (through Bing maps), Microsoft Corporation / CNES / Airbus, and the National Library of Scotland
