Hi there thought this might be of interest to you.

I bought a set of pipes and on removing the inside layer of the box , I found this inscription.

This box was presented by Lord Stair

of Lochinch Castle

To Thomas Lees

Army Cadet pipe band

in 1944

Now belongs to His Grand Nephew

Tommy Clanachan.

inside the box are a set of Lawrie Pipes,

was wondering if these were the pipes that came with the box.

Could any one help?.

Further to my 31 1 2012 entry.

It has now been confirmed my great aunt Alice resided in Achany house. She was married to Angas MacPherson who retired to Achany house. Angas was piper to Andrew Carnegie. Their son Malcolm also became a renown piper.

Thanks to Gazetteer for Scotland another facet in my family geneology is revealed.

I am looking for a connection to my mother's ancestors. Her maiden name was Tynes (father Robert Riley - Born: Shawsville, Virginia)and my research only goes as far back to the early 1800's to her grandfather. Robert Riley Tynes' military census record has his home of record at time of his WWI service as Roanoke, Virginia. I lose track of the line with her grandfather (Washington Tynes). I do not know if there is a potential kinship to the Tynes family from the coast of Virginia ( http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~tmark/TynesPlantation.html ). If there is a know connection please let me know.

Hello:

I just stumbled on to your site while doing some research on Dallas -- Scotland, that is! Many native Scots and probably 99.99% of Texans have no idea that there is a town in the north of Scotland called Dallas! As a member of The Scottish Society of Dallas (www.scotsindallas.org) we have a lot of fun sharing that fact with attendees at the various gatherings, festivals and civic activities that we get involved with over the course of a year. I have changed our "Dallas Scotland" link, on our Scottish Links web page, to point to your URL for the village of Dallas. I've also made a modest donation in the hope that you will be able to keep up the good work that you are doing.

Sincerely,

Scott W. Fischer

14 August 2012:
Hi there.

I am trying to trace history on my live in partner's late father. He was born at Overton Cluny, Overton was a farm very close to the still existing Cairnfold Cottage. He was born 25 January 1921, his name was Robert Wood Stewart, his parents were John and Edith, they were married at Tarves Church on 27 November 1914. We would love to know if Robert was an only child, unfortunately he left Cluny for Leiston in Suffolk and killed himself at 40 on 19 August 1961.

Any help please would be appreciated.

I believe my great aunt Alice Ross (her maiden name), may have married the owner of Achany house, or his son, in the early 20th century. I have photos of Achany house date unknown, but the dress of persons in one would indicate 1920's or 30's.

The photos gave no information about the house or people in them, however family "hearsay" was that Gt Aunt Alice lived in the Lairg area. I did a google earth search literally house by house and found a match for my photo in Achany house.

Hi, I am tracing my husband family and have got as far as finding out that his great grandfather was born in Kirkcudbright.

His mothers name was Elizabeth Little Craik born around 1883 and lived in Chapel Street, Maxwelltown. He was born illegitamately and his fathers name was also Walter Connell..

It looks like Walter was brought up by his grandmother Jane or Janet Craik (chapel street) his grandfathers name was William Craik.

I am trying to find more information, especially about his father Walter Connell. Also he was born in Bogrie Cottage.

I would appreciate it if comeone could shed some light on this.

Many Thanks

My paternal grandfather came to America @1892 from Scotland. He was Archie Reid Ogilvie and the son of William (1823-?) and Jane Forsyth Ogilvie (@1843-1891). William was born in Aberdeen and Jane was born in Lossiemouth, Elgin. The last place of residence I have for both is in Old Machar, Aberdeenshire in 1871. They had several children and several came to America planning to start a business and then their parents would join them since the mother's health was poor and they felt that she would do better in America. They were in the furniture/lumber industry.

Any help that you could give me would be most appreciated.

"Edinburgh's War" is a collaborative venture involving The Centre for The Study of The Two World Wars at the University of Edinburgh, the City of Edinburgh Libraries, The Scottish War Memorials Project, and community history groups. A truly fascinating story of Edinburgh, Leith and the Lothians in World War One has emerged. A virtual history archive went live in October 2010 and can be found at www.edinburghs-war.ed.ac.uk. We continue to find more and more information, and people are sending us stories that we believe would never have been told were it not for this Project which continues to develop.

The plan now is for the Project to be extended to become "Scotland's War".

The centenary of the outbreak of World War One in 1914 is fast approaching and many organisations, groups and individuals are planning to mark the event. Many of them, individuals and families, have archive material and artefacts that have never seen the light of day.

I have traced my family to the Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire area of Scotland. I've found some birth and marriage records through the Mormon church records. These records state that the births and marriages occurred in Saint Nicholas Blotter and Scroll, Aberdeen, Aberdeen, Scotland. Can anyone tell me what "Saint Nicholas Blotter and Scroll" refers to...a village, a church, etc? The family surnames that I am descended from are Ross, Alexander, and Booth. Is anyone else researching these families and have family information. Thank you...Sheila

i have just discovered that my ggggggggggggg (13th) grandfather was born in the parish of Kilmadock in 1654 named John Meiklejohn (this surname is not in your list of names on another page by the way), later the family moved to St Ninians. I have full details of the family in St Ninians but have not had any success in Kilmadock. John married Elizabeth Moir dob 1658 but I have not got DOM or any other details, there must have be family in Kilmadock before John. I would dearly like to get grave stone inscriptions for the Meiklejohn's

From early April to late September I take members of my motorbike club on various run outs around the central belt of Scotland and beyond. I had bought your brilliant book "Scotland an Encyclopedia of Places and Landscapes" which lead me to this website.

Its a great source of information for me in helping to plan the routes and search the places which we pass through.

My most recent best discovery is Culross, a wee gem on the shore of the Firth of Forth.

Keep up the good work,

Lady Stair's House.

I am puzzled by the name of Sir Walter Gray. As one of his descendants I had thought it was Sir Willaim Gray who is one of my ancestors.

The name William appears in other artricles about this house.
