When I said in my previous comment that "Balnagowan Castle eventually always returns to Clan Ross", I should have added"...so far...." I meant no offence to its current owner who has admirably restored it. My comment was simply anhistorical note which originated from my understanding that during past times Balnagowan Castle was owned by non-Clan Ross owners, but eventually was repossessed by Clan Ross.

I am trying to find out about my family, The Thomsons and Stronachs in Aberdeenshire and Banff and the Clarks who came for Fife (dunfermline i think) and the Neaves & Bowmans from Forfar. I am getting on okay with, the last census was 1901 which has made it more difficult to check things.

Just spent Christmas at Barony Castle Hotel Eddleston near Peebles and had a most enjoyable time; staff are tremendous; a gem of a place. Young Stephen Tood an accordionist from Dalkeith played on Christmas day evening; that was the icing on the cake for me. If you are in the Borders you must visit.

We have done alot of geneaolgy work here, but would like to know what family we still have in Scotlan. Our forefathers were David and Elizabeth Patterson Cook of Devon, Fifeshire, Scotland. David was part of the close knit Cook, Patterson and Hunter clans. David, Elizabeth and children boarded a ship called Josiah Bradlee and sailed to the United States, landing in New Orleans on April 18, 1850. Can anyone help with family prior to David and Elizabeth Patterson Cook?

I'm researching one of my ancestors. Andrew Douglas was born in 1826 and the 1861 Census states that he was born in Scotland but the town name is unreadable - something like Kastanglan. Has anyone got any idea where it might be - I don't even know which county to start in? Thanks in advance.

Hello again, also wondering anyone would have information on an ancestor in the family. My Grandmother was Sarah "Sadie" Millar and grew up in Muirkirk. She told me stories when I was a child of a relative, possibly a "great-great" uncle that was an explorer and expoditionist that actually had a waterfall named after him, believed to be somwhere in Africa, or South America. Any info would be helpful..

Aw'right?!! Just wanted to say I find your site very interesting and helpful. Came over on my first overseas trip in Sept. of 2007 to visit family. I was awe-struck the whole 12 days I was there, and glad I got to see where my grandmother grew up. Muirkirk, Cumnock, Mauchline, Ayr, Prestwick, Glasgow, Edinburgh, AYE!! What a great trip!! Was wondering if you'd put on Geo-history map, Cairn table, and Tibbie's Brig, over in Muirkirk. I constantly heard all about them from my Grandma while growing up. The two go hand in hand with Robbie Burns.. Take care, and hope to be back next summer. Ta-da!!

I donated 2 rare gazetteers to NSL (see Asst. Map Curator Christopher Fleet):
1)Comprehensive Gazetteer of Scotland by John Parker Lawson, published by A. Fullarton and Co./184-? Vol A-Elie
and
2)Comprehensive Gazetteer of Scotland (Vol EDI-Z),
published by Blackie & Son/184-?
Though by different publisher they overlap and have same type font; probably as a result of the merger between the 2 publishers.
I hope this information is helpful as I cannot find these gazetteers other than in databases.
Just so you know I'm a Librarian.

Hi,
I am looking for information on people that were living in Leslie in the the period from 1840 to 1850. I have two brothers in my family tree that were born in Leslie in 1843 and 1847. Names are James Steele and John Steele. their parents were John Steele and Isabella. John was a weaver and most probably worked in that trade in Leslie.
If any one has info on the people, or the weaving industry in Leslie I would appreciate hearing from them.
Cheers,

I had a penpal from Scotland sometime between 1960-64 and am wondering if anyone reading these comments might know of her or her family. I lost touch with her after that time. Her name was Susan McIntosh and she lived at Fettes College. I believe her father was employed there...an instructor if I am remembering correctly. I was thinking of her today and found this website when looking up Fettes College on the Internet. It would be wonderful to reestablish contact with her. Thank you for any information you can give to me.

I have ran across some letters from a penpal that I had in 1964-66. Her address was 8 SaughtonHall Avenue. Edinburgh, Scotland. I can not find that street anywhere on any maps. She mentioned how the Beatles were there for a one night stand before heading over to the U.S. for the Ed Sullivan show.. She said she was hoping that the US would accept them.. So interesting!! Just wanted to know if anyone remembers that street and if replaced by another name, what is it?? This is an interesting site. Thank you for any information you can give me... Thanks,
P.Creed
