Monkton

South Ayrshire

A village in the Kyle district of Ayrshire, Monkton lies to the northeast of Prestwick Airport, and 6 miles (10 km) north of Ayr. It developed as a weaving settlement in the 18th century and in association with road and rail transport in the 19th century. In 1935 an airport, Flying Training School and aircraft construction facilities were established nearby at Prestwick which became an international airport in 1946. The village, which still has aero engineering industries, was bypassed in the 1970s.
