A picturesque hamlet in the Kyle district of Ayrshire, Straiton lies on the Water of Girvan, 6 miles (10 km) southeast of Maybole. It was laid out as a linear planned village c.1760 by Thomas, Earl of Cassillis and was virtually rebuilt c.1900 by Sir Edward Hunter Blair of Blairquhan. The village is characterised by a narrow main street flanked by low single storey cottages on either side, buildings of note including the Black Bull Inn (1766), Traboyack (1795) and the church (1758, restored 1901) which contains a pre-Reformation chantry chapel founded in 1350 and enlarged in the 15th century. Straiton developed in association with forestry.
