A village in the Kyle district of Ayrshire, Tarbolton lies 4 miles (6.5 km) west of Mauchline and 5 miles (8 km) east of Prestwick. Designated a burgh of barony in 1671, it developed initially in association with coal mining. In 1780 a debating society known as the Bachelor's Club was established by the poet Robert Burns and his friends. They met in a cottage in Sandgate Street acquired by the National Trust for Scotland in 1938.
