A settlement in South Ayrshire, Coylton lies 5 miles (8 km) east of Ayr on the A70 road to Cumnock. It comprises the farm villages of Low Coylton, Hillhead (formerly New Coylton) and Joppa and has grown substantially as a residential settlement since the 1970s though does not yet have all the facilities of a modern town.
