Sourlie


North Ayrshire

A location and former collier hamlet in the Cunninghame district of North Ayrshire, Sourlie lies on the northeastern margin of the New Town of Irvine, 2½ miles (4 km) from the town centre. Coal mining was recorded here in 1808 and Sourlie Coal Pit was still operating at the beginning of the 20th C. but it and the associated miners' cottages are long gone. The site is now occupies by Sourlie Wood Nature Reserve.
