Old Monkland

North Lanarkshire

Once a distinct hamlet, Old Monkland now forms a southern suburb of Coatbridge, lying on the River North Calder in a parish of the same name. James Baird (1802-76), a founder of William Baird & Co. which became the largest producers of iron in Britain, was born on a farm nearby.
