Salsburgh

(Sallysburgh)
North Lanarkshire

A village in the North Lanarkshire parish of Shotts, Salsburgh lies to the south of the M8 motorway, 5 miles (7 km) southeast of Airdrie and 3 miles (5 km) northwest of Shotts. The name is derived from Sally Young, the wife of the landowner in the 18th C. Sallysburgh was later shortened to Salsburgh. It grew significantly in association with coal mining and quarrying during the 19th century. In 1845, tragedy struck when eight boys from the village were killed having fallen through ice on Bogfoot Reservoir, which lay a quarter-mile (0.5 km) to the north but is no longer extant. Public housing was constructed in the early 20th, while the M8 motorway now runs just to the north of the village. Salsburgh benefits from an active heritage group. The Kirk o' Shotts is located a mile (1.5 km) to the east.
