Mossend Freight Centre, Eurocentral

An industrial settlement of North Lanarkshire Council, Mossend now forms an eastern district of Bellshill, some 2 miles (3 km) north of Motherwell and a similar distance northeast of Strathclyde Country Park. Mossend developed in association with the Thankerton Colliery, which lay to the east, and an iron-works which became the immense Clydesdale Iron & Steel Works and lay to the north of the village. Thankerton Colliery was sunk in 1850 but closed in the 1950s. The Steel Works lasted until 1990. These enterprises attracted migrant labour, particularly from Lithuania, and the Scottish Lithuanian Club survives on Calder Road. Lanarkshire Central Mosque was built here 1997-2005. The land to the northeast was redeveloped as the Eurocentral Rail Terminal and Eurocentral enterprise zone.
