Lower Grulin

(Grulin Iochdrach)
Highland

One of two abandoned townships which once represented thriving crofting communities on the SW coast of the island of Eigg in the Inner Hebrides, Lower Grulin (Gael: Grulin Iochdrach) is situated ¾ mile (1.2 km) to the northwest of Upper Grulin and 2¼ miles (3.5 km) west northwest of Galmisdale. It comprises fourteen unroofed buildings which were abandoned after the 1847 potato famine with many of the former residents emigrating to Canada. Golden Eagles can often be observed hereabouts.
