Pathhead

A small village in Midlothian, Pathhead lies on the eastern bank of the Tyne Water, 4 miles (6.5 km) southeast of Dalkeith. Originally the site of three overlapping Roman marching camps on the ancient Dere Street, the modern settlement began on a main routeway linked by a path to a ford on the Tyne that was replaced by a bridge in 1831. The village developed in association with road transport, sawmilling and the quarrying of lime. Today there are shops, a post office and a village hall scattered along the steeply-sloping Main Street, which represents a section of the A68 Trunk Road. Tynewater Primary School lies on the western edge of the village and there is also a medical centre. The village also benefits from a football ground at Callander Park and a bowling green. The village is protected as a Conservation Area.
