Catcune

Midlothian

A small settlement on the Gore Water in Midlothian, Catcune is situated a half-mile (1 km) southeast of Gorebridge. A corn mill was established here in 1620 and this had grown to become a substantial operation by the mid-19th C. with a large stone-built granary built next to the railway. The mill closed in 1979. The older mill buildings and granary have subsequently been converted to domestic use. Catcune House and Catcune Farm lie to the southeast, while Harvieston House and Estate lie to the north. The site of Catcune Castle, which was a stronghold of the Borthwick family, lies to the north. A railway junction and station here were known as Fushiebridge. The Borders Railway again passes through Catcune, having re-opened in 2015.
