A former Midlothian mining village which grew up next to a roadside inn lying to the west of the A 701 road a mile (1.5 km) southwest of Loanhead. Opposite once lay Bilston Glen Colliery, one of the deepest mines in Europe which opened in 1963 and had an extensive network of underground roadways extending to the former Monktonhall Colliery 5 miles (8 km) to the northeast. Bilston Glen closed in 1989 having flooded during the miner's strike and the site has subsequently been redeveloped as Bilston Industrial Estate. The village has grown markedly in the 2010s and 2020s with new housing developed to the northwest and south. To the north is Pentland Park, a residential site for mobile homes.
