Flemington

A former weaving village in North Lanarkshire, Flemington went on to develop through iron and steel-making and now forms a southeastern district of Motherwell. The massive Dalzell Iron and Steel Works opened to the northwest in 1872 and the steel-plate mill was still operating as Liberty Steel Dalzell in 2018, while the Flemington Works of the Lanarkshire Steel Company was established in 1889 but closed in 1979. The Ravenscraig Steel Works, one of the largest in the world, was developed adjacent from the 1950s but closed in 1992. The Motherwell Campus of New College Lanarkshire now occupies part of the site, while Flemington Industrial Park lies to the east next to Craigneuk.

Confusingly there is another Flemington located 7 miles (11 km) west northwest, which is a suburb of Cambuslang and also began with textiles and was associated with iron and steel making and coal mining.
