Kyleakin

Highland

A village at the southeastern tip of the island of Skye, Kyleakin was the main ferry terminal linking the island with Kyle of Lochalsh on the mainland until the opening of the Skye Bridge across Kyle Akin in 1995. The village was laid out in 1811 and later received steamers. In the 20th century it developed as a fishing and ferry port. The campaigning West Highland Free Press was established in Kyleakin in 1972. The former MacKinnon stronghold of Caisteal Maol which dates from the 15th century lies at the east end of the village.
