Fortrose

A royal burgh in the Highland Council Area parish of Rosemarkie, Fortrose lies on the Black Isle overlooking the Cromarty Firth opposite Fort George. In 1455 the two settlements of Chanonry and Rosemarkie were united as an ecclesiastical burgh under the Bishop of Ross, and in 1592 it was raised to the status of a royal burgh. Fortrose's red sandstone cathedral was associated with a famous mediaeval school of divinity and was founded as the centre of a bishopric by King David I in 1124. Fortrose Academy was founded in 1791.
