Gairlochy

Highland

A small settlement in the Great Glen, Highland Council Area, Gairlochy lies at the southern end of Loch Lochy, 3 miles (5 km) northwest of Spean Bridge. An overflow from Loch Lochy was created here during the building of locks on the Caledonian Canal, the diverted water plunging into the River Spean over artificial waterfalls that gave the hamlet its name, Gairlochy (the roar of the Lochy). The Mucomir hydro-electric power station beside the falls was built in 1960. The Great Glen Cycle Route passes through Gairlochy which has hotel and caravan facilities.
