Avoch

A village in Easter Ross, Avoch (pronounced 'awch') lies on the inner Moray Firth at the mouth of the Killen Burn, 2 miles (3 km) west of Fortrose. Said to have originated following the wreck of a galleon from the Spanish Armada of 1588, Avoch developed as a fishing village that produced sailcloth and textiles in the 18th and 19th centuries. Its harbour was built in 1814 to a design by Thomas Telford and in 1894 the Fortrose branch of the Highland Railway connected with the settlement. The station was closed to passenger traffic in 1951 and goods services in 1960. Fishing thrived until the 1970s and today, the harbour of Avoch is now mainly used by pleasure craft.
