Bernera

Highland

A location in Highland Council Area, Bernera overlooks Glenelg Bay, opposite the Isle of Skye. The Bernera military barracks was one of four established after the 1745 Jacobite Rising, its main purpose being to control the narrow crossing from the mainland to Skye. Now a ruin, it once accommodated up to 200 soldiers, the garrison being finally withdrawn c.1800.
