Church of Scotland, Boat of Garten

A village in Strathspey, Highland Council Area, Boat of Garten lies on the west side of the River Spey, 6 miles (10 km) northeast of Aviemore. A former ferry crossing, Boat of Garten developed as a railway village when the Inverness & Perth Junction Railway opened its main line from Forres to Dunkeld in 1863. Three years later Boat of Garten became a junction on the opening of the Great North of Scotland Railway line to Nethy Bridge and beyond. With the advent of tourism, an 18-hole golf course was established in 1898. Passenger rail travel ceased in 1965 but in 1973 the Strathspey Railway Society reopened the line from Boat of Garten to Aviemore for tourist use, the former station being used as their headquarters. Corronich Sawmill, to the north, is the biggest employer in the village, processing 98,000 sq. m of timber annually. At nearby Loch Garten nature reserve is an osprey nesting site with viewing facilities.
