Scarrabus

(Scarabus)
Argyll and Bute

A location, with a farm, which was once a larger settlement, in the centre of Islay (Argyll and Bute), Scarrabus (or Scarabus) lies 1¼ miles (2 km) north of Redhouses and 2 miles (3 km) north northeast of Bridgend. The name includes the distinctly Norse suffix 'bus' meaning farm or homestead. There was a short-lived farm-scale whisky distillery set up here by John Darrach following liberalisation offered by the Small Stills Act of 1816, but it seems to have lasted only two years. This may well be the same man who had been prosecuted under the Excise Act of 1801 for illegal distilling at Airigh Ghuaidhre.
