Knightswood

Glasgow City

Located to the northwest of the city centre of Glasgow, a mile (1.5 km) northwest of Anniesland and 1¼ miles (2 km) southeast of Drumchapel, Knightswood was developed as the largest of the inter-war housing schemes and comprises cottages and cottage flats, cream-harled with grey slate roofs and decorative brickwork, laid out from 1923 along avenues and crescents. Developed on the Knightswood Estate, farmland peppered with numerous old iron and coal pits and shafts, the settlement of Knightswood Rows existed by the 1860s and the Knightswood Infectious Diseases Hospital was built in 1877 and operated until the 1960s. The initial phase of the housing scheme was equal in size to Mosspark with over 1100 homes built to a fairly grand plan. Subsequent phases added another 5000 houses but costs were cut. In the 1960s taller blocks of flats were built to replace prefabs which had been built in the late 1940s but were demolished having reached the end of their design life. Many properties have now been sold under right-to-buy legislation.
