A district on the south side of Glasgow near the River Cart, Langside was one of the city's 19th-century planned extensions. A feu plan developed by Neale Thomson who acquired the site in 1852 resulted in the building of villas and terraced houses on crescents and avenues. The original village of Langside survived until the mid-1890s when it was replaced by tenement housing. Langside was the site of a battle in 1568 in which the forces of Mary Queen of Scots, who had escaped from Loch Leven, were defeated by troops loyal to her half brother James Stuart, 1st Earl of Moray and Regent of Scotland.
