Anniesland

Glasgow City

Anniesland sits at the end of Great Western Road, northwest of Glasgow city centre, between Knightswood and Maryhill. Although Great Western Road was extended out as far as Anniesland Toll by 1850, there were few houses in this area as it was predominantly agricultural and industrial in nature. In nearby Temple a gasworks was founded to serve the emerging northwest suburbs but it was not until the arrival of the railway that the middle classes moved into villas and tenements here. Anniesland station still provides a commuter rail service to Queen Street and Central stations.
