A former industrial hamlet on the left bank of the Levern Water in East Renfrewshire, Gateside lies a mile (1.5 km) west of Barrhead and a similar distance northeast of Neilston. It was a centre of textile manufacture from the 18th century until the end of the 19th century, with cotton mills, bleach and dye-works.
