Vicarsford

(Cowbakie)
Fife

A settlement of NE Fife, Vicarsford lies a mile (1.5 km) east northeast of Pickletillum and 2¼ miles (3.5 km) south of Tayport. Vicarsford comprises a farm (which is shown on earlier Ordnance Survey maps as Cowbakie) and Vicarsford Cottages (shown as The Cotton). Vicarsford Cemetery is located on a prominent hill a mile (1.5 km) to the west northwest, to the north of Drumoig, on the site of the former Vicarsford Farm. The cemetery opened in 1894 to replace Forgan Kirkyard, which was full. One of the first burials was Lady Emily Leng (1829-94) the first wife of Sir John Leng (1828 - 1906) who built a remarkable French Gothic chapel in her memory, which is now A-listed. This chapel was constructed between 1895-97 using sandstone brought from Caen in Normandy and styled on La Sainte Chappelle in Paris. The memorial chapel was never intended to be a place for regular worship and is non-denominational, which is very unusual in Scotland.
