A picturesque linear village of East Lothian, Garvald lies on the Papana Water, 5 miles (8 km) southeast of Haddington and 4 miles (6.5 km) south of East Linton, at the foot of the Lammermuir Hills. Its church, rebuilt in 1829, dates from the 12th century and amongst a number of listed 18th and 19th-century buildings within a designated conservation area are the former school and schoolhouse. A half-mile (1 km) to the southeast is the Cistercian community of Nunraw Abbey, while 5 miles (8 km) beyond is the Whiteadder Reservoir which supplies water to the settlements of East Lothian. An ambitious scheme by the North British Railway to extend a branch railway line from Gifford to Garvald and on to the east coast main line was never completed and trains stopped running to Gifford in 1948.
