Lugton

East Ayrshire

A small village in the Cunninghame district of Ayrshire, Lugton lies 4 miles (6.5 km) north of Stewarton, close to the border with Renfrewshire. The village developed as a road and rail junction and in association with a small iron-works and the quarrying of limestone. Built in the 1810s, turnpike roads from Kilmarnock and Irvine combine here to connect with Glasgow. There were also a complex set of railway intersections here between the Glasgow, Barrhead and Kilmarnock Joint Railway, and the Lanarkshire and Ayrshire Railway, with two stations; Lugton Station on the former (opened in 1871 and closed in 1966), and Lugton High Station on the latter line, which operated between 1903 and 1932.
