The hamlet of Moscow sits in farmland 4 miles (7 km) northeast of Kilmarnock in East Ayrshire. Like many of the valley settlements, it has an agricultural past, and although farming is still undertaken here, the settlement is predominantly residential in nature. Its name is most likely a corruption of 'Moss-Haw' although some suggest it was renamed to mark Napoleon's retreat from Moscow in 1812 and others because Russian prisoners were held nearby following the Crimean War. It lies on the Volga Burn, but this name is mischievous.
