A western suburb of Edinburgh, Currie was one of several former distinct villages along the Water of Leith on the north side of the Pentland Hills. Currie had several mills in the past including those for producing paper and snuff. Notable buildings include Lennox Tower (15th-century), the Kirk (1784, on the site of a pre-Reformation church and with painted false windows) and the Glenburn Hotel (1887) by Sir R. Rowand Anderson. A loop on the Caledonian railway brought a railway service from Edinburgh through the centre of Currie between 1874 and the 1960s, although passenger traffic ceased in 1943. A commuter station remains on the Glasgow line to the north at Curriehill, with the campus of Heriot Watt University beyond.
