Gatehead

East Ayrshire

A hamlet of SW East Ayrshire on its border with South Ayrshire, Gatehead lies on the north bank of the River Irvine 1¼ miles (2 km) south of Crosshouse and 2 miles (3 km) northeast of Dundonald. The Kilmarnock-Troon railway runs through Gatehead, but its station has been closed since 1969. There were once coal mines at Newfield and Fortacre to the south.
