Haugh

East Ayrshire

A small settlement on the north bank of the River Ayr in East Ayrshire, Haugh lies a mile (1.5 km) south of Mauchline. There was a curling stone mill here in the 1850s, along with a corn and saw mill, woollen mill, malt kiln and smithy. By the 1890s the ford across the river was augmented by a suspension foot-bridge and the Ballochmyle Creamery had opened. Now B-listed, this became an optics factory and then lay abandoned for many years despite plans to turn it into residential flats. The Scottish Milk Marketing Board opened the Mauchline Creamery in 1936, producing Cheddar cheese, butter and cream until its closure in 2008.
