Kilmaurs


East Ayrshire

A village in the Cunninghame district of North Ayrshire, Kilmaurs lies to the east of the Carmel Water, 2 miles (3 km) northwest of Kilmarnock. Kilmaurs Place was the seat of the earls of Glencairn who established a collegiate church in the village which became a burgh of barony in 1527. It developed in association with grain milling and the manufacture of cutlery, bonnets, boots and hosiery. Modern industry includes the manufacture of dairy produce and knitwear. Its old tolbooth remains.
