The largest village of north Falkirk Council Area, Airth lies on the A905 road close to the River Forth beneath a wooded escarpment to the north of the Bowtrees roundabout. The 18th Century core of the village, which includes a Market Cross (1697), is a designated Conservation Area. On the south slope of Airth Hill is a ruined church once associated with Holyrood Abbey and Airth Castle, a 16th century castle with an early 19th century facade by David Hamilton (1768 - 1843), now a hotel and conference centre. In 1633 the earldom of Airth was conferred upon William Graham of Monteith, but the title became extinct in 1694.
