Bellsbank

East Ayrshire

A detached portion of the East Ayrshire village of Dalmellington, Bellsbank occupies a spectacular hillside location just to the east of the River Doon and comprises a post-World War II public housing estate built to accommodate miners. The foundation-stone of the church was laid in 1957. While it supports a school, post office, a few shops and a public house, Bellsbank has suffered considerably since the closure of the mines, with an unemployment rate which reached 37% in the 1990s, the highest in Scotland.
