A large village in Falkirk Council area, situated on the Bonny Water and the Forth and Clyde Canal 4 miles (6.5 km) west of Falkirk, Bonnybridge developed in the 19th Century in association with a paper mill, saw mill and iron foundries. High Bonnybridge with its industrial estate lies to the south, and to the west is a sand and gravel quarry. Rough Castle, the most complete of the surviving roman forts on the Antonine Wall is nearby.

More recently, Bonnybridge has become known as the 'UFO capital' of the UK, with more than 300 sightings of unidentified flying objects annually. This may be explained by the village lying beneath the flight paths of Glasgow, Edinburgh and Cumbernauld Airports.
