Couplaw

South Lanarkshire

A location and former farm in South Lanarkshire, Couplaw lies 1½ miles (2.5 km) west of Strathaven. It is now the site of Strathaven Airfield. In 2019, Edinburgh-based architect Richard Murphy (b. 1955) completed a startlingly-modern house next to the airfield for its owners. Inspired by an aircraft hangar, the steel-framed and corrugated aluminium-clad structure comprises a pitched roof barn, mounted on a base comprising a pair of circular drum bases. The house featured in the Channel Four television programme Grand Designs and won awards from the Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland and the Royal Institute of British Architects.
