Monreith

A small 19th-century estate village in the western Machars of Dumfries and Galloway, Monreith lies on the east shore of Luce Bay, 2½ miles (4 km) southeast of Port William and 6 miles (10 km) west of Wigtown. The village was once known for its tile and brick works, which closed in the 1920s. Monreith House to the north was built for the Maxwells of Monreith in 1794 to replace the earlier Myrton Castle whose ruins still stand in the grounds. To the south, above the remains of Kirkmaiden church, is a monument to the author Gavin Maxwell who was born nearby at the House of Elrig.
