A village of Lauderdale in the Scottish Borders, Earlston lies to the east of the Leader Water, 3 miles (5 km) north of Newton St Boswells. Created a burgh of barony in 1489, its peel tower dates from the 16th century. An earlier tower and estate were owned by the 13th-century seer Thomas Learmont of Ercildoune (Earlston), or Thomas the Rhymer. Modern industries include the manufacture of textiles and farm machinery.
