A location between Bathgate and Armadale in West Lothian, Boghead is situated to the west of Falside. Once an estate and the site of Boghead House, which was demolished in 1962, all that remains is a doo'cot, gardener's cottage and gatehouse. Boghead House was built in the later 18th C., and was owned by the Durham family until 1929. The Durhams made their money from the coal which underlay their estate; there were several mines in the vicinity and they built Durhamtown (or Durhamtoun) to house their miners. Durhamtown lay next to the Bathgate Chemical Works which extracted oil from the so-called Boghead Coal, a generic name subsequently adopted internationally for a bituminous brown coal, rich in organic matter, which was laid down on the beds of lakes.
Boghead Burn rises to the north of Tippethill and flows east northeast to fall into the Bogburn Flood Lagoons, to the south of Bathgate.
