Mail

(Mel)

A hamlet which represents the principal settlement on the island of Bressay in Shetland, Mail (or Mel) lies a half-mile (1 km) southeast of the ferry terminal at Maryfield and ¾ mile (1.2 km) across the Bressay Sound from Lerwick. The name 'mel' is Old Norse for 'sand'. The island's school, public hall, church, post office and shop are all located here. A harbour and marina has been formed within the Voe of Leiraness by breakwaters which reach out to the Holm of Mel. Until 1975, the pier was used for the island's ferry. The Sands of Mel lie to the southwest.
