Ganavan

(Gaineamhan)

A roadend settlement located 1¼ miles (2 km) north of Oban in Argyll and Bute, Ganavan (Gael: Gaineamhan) effectively comprises a northern suburb of that town, but with no facilities. Ganavan Bay provides a fine sandy beach, and a car park which was once occupied by beach huts. The main residential development lies a quarter-mile (0.4 km) south of the Bay. Oban Golf Club once had its course behind the Bay, until the land was taken over for a Flying Boat Maintenance Base during World War II. Later there was a large caravan park here which developed into a holiday village between 2004-07. In 2011-12 this was replaced by Ganavan Sands, a luxury residential development.
