Doune

An isolated settlement on the west coast of the Knoydart peninsula, Doune is located 1¼ miles (2 km) south southwest of Airor and 4½ miles (7 km) northwest of Inverie, looking out to Skye across the Sound of Sleat. The settlement takes its name from the ancient vitrified fort of Dun Ban, which lies on a headland to the northwest. There was once a significant village here, accommodating 130 people, but this was cleared for sheep in the mid-19th C. One cottage remained, but this was abandoned in 1923. From 1982, this ruined cottage was re-occupied and restored by the Robinson family, who had come from Cornwall. Further houses and a small hotel were developed and, by the early 21st C., a community re-established. Doune is connected to Inverie by a rough track but a pier allows small boats to travel to Mallaig.
