Newton of Kilmeny

A small roadside settlement on the A846 in the centre of the island of Islay, Argyll and Bute, Newton of Kilmeny lies a half-mile (1 km) northeast of Bridgend and 3¾ miles (6 km) southwest of Ballygrant. Newton House lies to the south. A distillery opened here in 1819, taking advantage of the legalisation provided by the Small Stills Act of 1816. It operated until 1837 and seems to have produced around 27,500 litres (6000 gallons) of spirit per year.
