A small town in Renfrewshire, Bridge of Weir lies 6 miles (10 km) west of Paisley. Established near the bridge of Weir in 1792, the village developed in association with cotton milling and tanning industries. The former Cotton Mills were established in 1790-1840 on the River Gryfe. The Bridge of Weir Leather Company, founded in 1905, produces leather seats for cars, and the town has become a popular holiday resort with golf and fishing facilities. Notable buildings include Castle Terrace (1882 by Robert Raeburn, which was the formerly the Ranfurly Hotel), St Machar's Church (1877-78), and Ranfurly Castle (15th Century) now located on a golf course but built for the Knox family.
