A substantial village in the Garioch District of Central Aberdeenshire, Insch lies 3 miles (5 km) northwest of Oyne and 9 miles (14.5 km) west northwest of Inverurie. The village benefits from a primary school, leisure centre, cottage hospital, police station, two churches, a railway station and a golf courses, which was extended from 9 to 18 holes in 1997. The settlement has grown markedly from the late 20th century.

The hill-fort of Dunnideer lies a mile (1.5 km) to the west.
